Hi everyone-
It has been a while since I have been on here. I need advice my son keeps stealing the phones and calling 911.
Thanks I do know a family this happened to. Their adult son started regularly calling 911. The family ended up removing all phones from the home. The mother and father did get cell phones which they kept with them at all times. Their solution worked for them. I think the above suggestions are also good and worth a try. Good Luck! I agree about calling the police station to let them know. Maybe try also giving him a phone to play with thats not plugged in ?? This is unrelated sort of but if you do call the police i would ask them if they have the autism initiative in place, Here is a link to it so you can refer to the creators name. http://www.autismriskmanagement.com/ I like the idea of the phone not plugged in. Have him decorate it with stickers or something he likes and tell him that is the only phone he is allowed to play with. Otherwise the only thing I can think of is to remove all but one phone and have that one in a hard to reach area or a cordless that you can attach to a belt loop or something so it's always with you? Good luck, I hope you find a quick solution. I know of a case here in Norway where an adult woman called 911 repeatedly. She was verbal, but could not understand the operator's or police's demands that she quit calling. In her mind, she needed immediate assistance, emergency help for this and that. She did not understand that 911 help was not the same as help from family and friends. The end of the sad story is that she was actually put in jail! Unbelievable that anyone could see that as an appropriate solution. Good luck figuring this out.
answers. Would that fill the need for your son?
I worked in a number of group homes and residents calling 911 for a
number of inappropriate reasons was not uncommon. They had a system
where any 911 calls would loop back to a phone available only to staff.
then staff could handle the call as needed. I know that if it is an official
group home or hospital that the police station will have that information
right on their sreen and with that they are aware that it could be a crank
or a more serious medical or behavioral emergency.
I would talk to police and ask if there is a way to have you guys on file so
that they are aware that your son might be dialing without appropriate
cause. Maybe they could have your cell numer so they can can call you
back in case the landline is blocked.
